Airwaves Yamaha's Leon Camier has broken Niall Mackenzie's
record from 1997 to take the most race wins in a BSB season, by
winning the third race of the day at Brands Hatch. The victory also
marked a momentous occasion for the GSE Racing team as they have
now secured 100 race wins in the superbike class.
Camier said: "I really don't know what to make of it all, it is
just such a dream come true for me and to have it all in one day is
just so amazing. One hundred wins for the team and then 14 wins
this season for me is just so much to take in. I need to thank
everyone who has supported me throughout my career, to get me where
I am today. I now just have my fingers crossed that we get no bad
luck and we can go on and finish the job, which is to win the
title."
Broc Parkes had a flying start and took the lead off the line on
the Kawasaki World Superbike, with Camier having a slow getaway and
dropping back through the field to eighth.
James Ellison on the second Airwaves Yamaha settled into third on
the opening lap but was pressurising Karl Muggeridge in second,
with the pair almost inseparable on track. Ellison made the move on
the second lap into Paddock Hill Bend but 'Muggas' was back on the
attack at Druids to reclaim the spot.
Camier meanwhile was slicing his way through the pack, making up
three places on the third lap to pass Stuart Easton, Tommy Hill and
Michael Rutter. A lap later he moved up the inside of his team-mate
Ellison to claim third, then set about catching the HM Plant Honda
ahead of him. Once he had passed Muggeridge, he began to close down
the advantage of Parkes who had edged away at the front.
As the laps counted down Camier was getting ever closer and on lap
15 Parkes was relegated to second by the determined Airwaves Yamaha
rider who then led to the flag to score his fourteenth win of the
season.
Ellison was also on a charge, determined to end his difficult
weekend on a high and, having dropped back to fifth during the
first laps, he was able to move to third when he passed Easton on
the twelfth lap. Ellison held on to claim his first podium of the
weekend, whilst his Hydrex Honda rival finished fourth.
John Laverty had an astounding race, to finish as the leading
Kawasaki in the final race of the weekend by finishing fifth in the
Buildbase colours after passing Muggeridge who was top of the HM
Plant Honda riders.
