Stanbridge Motorsport commit to join 2013 F3 Cup championship
09/08/2012 - Stanbridge Motorsport have announced plans to field a two car team to contest the 2013 F3 Cup championship.
The Leighton Buzzard-based outfit are no strangers to the
championship with team owner James Simons competing in the F3 Cup
this year. However, the team are now in a position to expand and
have committed to a two car team entry to challenge for the title
Stanbridge Motorsport intend to run Simons and 2008 BARC Formula Renault Club Class champion Fraser Smart. The Scotsman, who has previously raced alongside Simons in BARC Formula Renault, is due to compete in the Trophy Class for cars constructed from 1997-2001.
Simons head of Stanbridge Motorsport, has been hugely impressed by emergence of the F3 Cup and feels, the championship is the perfect surrounding in which to grow his team. While next season is many months away, Simons is hopeful his cars will become regular podium contenders in 2013.
He said: "The plan is for both myself and Fraser to do a full season in the F3 Cup next year. The thing we like about the F3 Cup is the fact drivers get to race decent cars at a decent level, but there is still the camaraderie in the pit lane. I'm not saying we don't take it seriously but it is a nice atmosphere when teams talk to each other and help each other out. It would be great to have both cars on the podium at the majority of rounds next season.
"This was the dream all along to get to this point where Stanbridge Motorsport are running several cars and a championship winning driver in Fraser."
Smart plans to make his F3 Cup debut with Stanbridge Motorsport
when the championship heads to the Silverstone GP circuit on 21/22
September. This will be Smart's first experience of racing an F3
car and is very much hoping to complete a full season next
Smart said: "I'm really excited to be back out racing again and I think the main thing that has brought me to the championship is the value and the quality of the cars. I'm a little bit rusty but I'm really looking forward to getting back out and racing. F3 is new to me and the Formula Renault cars don't have as much aero, so I'm nervous and excited to find out how different the cars are."

The F3 Cup heads to the Brands Hatch Grand Prix circuit for the sixth meeting of the year with the championship delicately poised. Just 5.5 points separates leader Tristan Cliffe and Chris Dittmann at the top of the standings with only a handful of races remaining to decide the inaugural F3 Cup champion.
